Five minutes with Peter Pearce, EREA NSW Board Chair

As we step into 2026, our refreshed Board of Directors brings renewed energy, experience and purpose to the governance of our Edmund Rice schools. United by a deep commitment to the Edmund Rice Charism, they are guided by the Touchstones of Liberating Education, Gospel Spirituality, Inclusive Community, and Justice and Solidarity. Together, our Board ensures that this mission remains vibrant and future‑focused - strengthening the foundations of our schools and upholding our promise to provide safe, hope‑filled and faith‑filled learning communities where every young person can flourish. To help our community get to know them better, we invite you to enjoy a short five‑minute Q&A with each Director as they share their reflections on why they choose to serve. This month, we chatted with the new Board Chair, Peter Pearce.
1. What inspires you most about serving in Edmund Rice schools and supporting the Edmund Rice Charism?
Being part of a work of church that has such valuable practical consequences day-to-day.
2. How do you see the Board contributing to the growth and wellbeing of our students, staff, and school communities?
Good question. Sometimes it’s hard to see where a school board adds value. My hope is by working collaboratively and being present in school life as much as we are able, and always trying to keep the focus on those we all serve, the board can be a unifying and innovating influence helping to advance our ministry purpose in the service of young people.
3. What values guide your decision‑making as a Director within an Edmund Rice educational context?
Collaboration; diligence; focus on students, their families and communities; and trying to always hold to the understanding that Edmund’s work is a work of church.
4. Why is it important to you to be part of anorganisation committed to justice, compassion, and educational excellence?
My credo, or one of them…..don’t be a bystander. Step forward and do for others what you are able, to improve each day.
