A Century of Faith, Service and Spirit

Published on
February 19, 2026

In 1926, in a modest building on Crown Lane in the heart of Wollongong, Br T.A. McMahon and his staff opened the doors of Christian Brothers College to 105 young boys. From those humble beginnings, a story began—one that would grow, evolve and endure for a full century.

Today, Edmund Rice College stands as a thriving educational community of nearly 1,100 students, nestled at the base of Mt Keira. As we enter our Centenary Year, we pause to honour the journey that has shaped us, while looking forward with confidence and hope to the future.

This milestone belongs not only to the College, but to the thousands of students, educators, families and supporters who have contributed to its rich legacy. Each has played a part in forming the distinctive “ERC Spirit” — a spirit grounded in faith, service, generosity and a deep commitment to the young men of the Illawarra.

That spirit was beautifully evident as our community gathered for the Opening Centenary Mass, a truly special moment of reflection and celebration. The day began with a smoking ceremony, acknowledging the land and setting a tone of respect and unity. The sound of pipes and a whistle then signalled the opening procession, as past and present students, parents and staff walked together, each carrying a relic that told a chapter of our shared history.

Led by Bishop Brian Mascord, the Mass brought together voices from across generations. Readings, prayers and reflections were offered by members of our wider community, while a choir of singers and musicians filled the space with music that lifted hearts and spirits. Together, we gave thanks for the vision that took root in 1926 and continues to guide us today.

During the celebration, we shared a special video capturing the voices of our alumni, past and current staff, and families. Their stories spoke powerfully of belonging, service and the values that have defined Edmund Rice College for a century.

As we celebrate 100 years of education and service, we remain mindful of all those who have walked before us and grateful for those who continue the journey today. With faith at our core and community at our heart, we look ahead inspired by our past and committed to shaping the future.

Honouring our past. Inspiring our future.
