Championing a New Era of Boyhood: Dr Stephen Gough

Representing the NSW EREA Colleges at the recent University of Queensland’s "Reimagining Boyhood" Conference, Dr Stephen Gough,Principal of Edmund Rice College (ERC), contributed to the vital conversationon the evolution of masculinity in modern education.
While global discourse often focuses on a "boyhood crisis"driven by digital noise and social media pressures, Dr Gough advocated for a more hopeful narrative: The Awakening. He believes that today’s young men arenot "broken," but are instead navigating a tension between their internal reality and the stoic public personas often demanded by digital platforms.
"Our job isn't to 'fix' boys, but to provide a school culture that is quiet enough for them to hear their own voices again." — Dr Stephen Gough
Dr Gough challenged the traditional "one-size-fits-all" moulds by celebrating the plurality of masculinity—the quiet, the creative, the sensitive, and the relational—colleges like ERC ensure every student finds their "tribe".
● Diverse Engagement: From STEM and Chess to Art, Music and Knitting clubs, students are encouraged to be their authentic selves rather than performing a narrow traditional version of manhood.
● Proactive Care: Moving from "policing to partnering," schools are using real-time data like bi-weekly Pulse Surveys and Sassyan Wellbeing alerts to listen to student needs before a crisis occurs.
● Tangible Impact: At ERC this shift has seen a dramatic rise in the student "Sense of Belonging, "climbing from 70% in 2022 to 90% in 2025.
Dr Gough emphasised that when boys are given agency—through co-constructing their own learning plans or leading via the Rice Bowl Podcast—their capacity for solidarity is unmatched. By teaching emotional language as a core literacy, ERC, and EREA Colleges more broadly are empowering young men to become compassionate leaders who use their strength to make a tangible difference in their communities.
