Reflections: Acting Deputy Principal - St Patrick's College - Jodie Connor

Published on
November 27, 2025

Through secondment opportunities, educators can challenge themselves, experience fresh perspectives, and strengthen their leadership journey. Jodie Connor exemplified this spirit by taking on the Acting Deputy Principal role at St Patrick’s College, bringing her expertise from St Edward’s College. This experience not only provided fresh insights into school leadership but also highlighted the value of adaptability and professional growth. We asked Jodie a few questions to uncover what inspired this journey and what others might learn from it.

1. What motivated you to take on the secondment as Acting Deputy Principal, and how did you prepare for the transition between schools?

I am always looking for opportunities that will enhance my leadership capabilities. This secondment presented a chance to challenge myself while contributing meaningfully to St Patrick’s. Coming from a regional context without nearby boys’ schools, I saw this as an invaluable experience to broaden my perspective. To prepare, I met with the Deputy Principal – Adrian Byrne - to understand his priorities, spent time at the college for an induction, reviewed annual reports and strategic documents, and consulted with the EREA CEO – Maura Manning - to align expectations and goals.

2. What have been the most valuable lessons or insights you’ve gained from working in a different school environment?

I discovered significant similarities across both schools, particularly the shared commitment to holistic student development. Transitioning from a school without Saturday sport, I gained insight into the ISA competition and its operational impact. Observing St Patrick’s approach to events, similar in purpose yet distinct in style was great! I also learned the importance of staff continuity and consistent practices in sustaining a strong school culture.

3. How has this experience influenced your leadership style or approach to decision-making?

This experience has shown me that my leadership approach is flexible and effective in unfamiliar settings. Working alongside new teams has deepened my appreciation for collaboration and reminded me of the importance of listening before leading. It also strengthened my confidence in applying strategic thinking and navigating complex school systems, even when the context is different from my own

4. What advice would you give to colleagues who are considering a secondment to broaden their skills and career opportunities?

I highly encourage anyone aspiring to leadership within EREA to apply for a secondment. The application process itself is a valuable exercise in reflection, while the interview provides an opportunity to articulate your leadership vision. If successful, you gain firsthand experience of another school’s operations, connect with dedicated educators, and deepen your understanding of shared philosophies. For me, the experience has been both affirming and professionally enriching.
