Student Leadership Network Event: Inspiring Leadership Through Service and Connection

On 20th and 21st of November, School Captains and Prefects from across our network gathered at the Edmund Rice Retreat Centre, Mulgoa, for an overnight Student Leadership Network Event. The program focused on leadership, service, and connection, providing students with opportunities to learn, reflect, and collaborate.
Day One Highlights
The event began on Thursday afternoon when students arrived to the choice of a refreshing bushwalk led by Mr Beacroft, or a meaningful Labyrinth experience with Mr Petrie. Following dinner, students were inspired by guest speaker Jack Brown, Old Boy of Edmund Rice College, Wollongong and founder of Talk2 Me Bro, who spoke passionately about the importance of checking in with mates, listening in times of need, and advocating for mental health—particularly men’s mental health. Jack’s message of resilience and openness resonated strongly with our young leaders.
The evening continued with lively trivia battles and games, creating a fun and engaging atmosphere before supper and lights out.
Day Two – Reflection and Growth
Friday began with breakfast and a heartfelt Acknowledgement of Country by Jessey O’Neill (CBHS Lewisham), setting the tone for a day of reflection and unity. The morning continued with Br Jeff Regan, who shared his journey with the Christian Brothers and spoke about leadership grounded in compassion, family, and service. A special Liturgy followed, featuring the lighting of school candles, combining soils from each campus, and the symbolic washing of feet—powerful reminders of leadership as service.
We were delighted to welcome Student Leaders from St Edmund’s College, Wahroonga, who joined Friday’s program with great enthusiasm.
Inspiring Speakers and Workshops
Following morning tea, students engaged in a dynamic workshop, “Sparking Your Initiative”, generating ideas and sharing strategies within their school groups to implement throughout their upcoming Leadership year in 2026.
Our next guest speaker was Mr John Brogden AM, Patron of Lifeline Australia, former political leader and Old Boy of St Patrick’s College, Strathfield, who delivered an inspiring address on resilience, mental health, and the power of mentorship. His message - “It’s okay not to be okay” and people will forgive you even if you make big mistakes —left a lasting impression on all present.
Students then collaborated in the “Making Connections” workshop, exchanging initiatives and building networks across schools. The event concluded with a reflective prayer and spirited renditions of each school song, celebrating unity across the schools.
Gratitude and Feedback
A heartfelt thank you to the Edmund Rice Retreat Centre catering team for keeping our student leaders well-nourished throughout the event. We also extend our gratitude to Mr Angus McPherson from Waverley College, whose photography beautifully captured the spirit and energy of the occasion. Appreciation goes to the planning committee for turning great ideas into reality, and to all staff who supervised and supported students during the programme.
The feedback from students and staff has been overwhelmingly positive—this was truly a memorable and impactful experience.
